People we want to help
1. A single lady who suffers from the effects of polio. She is able to walk a little with the aid of a crutch, but soon she will be confined to a wheelchair. Currently she lives in a FEMA trailer which she can keep for seven more months. She owns a house that was in poor condition before the hurricane now it requires massive repair. She has no money, not even enough for a permit for rebuilding.
2. An elderly couple would like to move back into their house which was flooded with eight feet of seawater. The house is made of brick and is in surprisingly good condition. We have put a roof on the house and we need to follow the electricians with sheetrock. The lady of the house asked us while we were working on her roof, how a person can know that they are saved. The problem is that the lack of labor will prevent us from further helping rebuild this house for many months.
3. A young widow, who lost her husband during the storm, and who has several children. A new roof has been put on her house and all that is needed is for the sheetrock work to be completed. Sheet rock installation is a big part of what we do to help people and it is very time consuming.
People we have helped
1. An elderly man who has an artificial leg due to diabetes. He lost his old artificial leg during the hurricane while climbing to the attic. His house flooded and he was forced to climb up into the attic. He had a brother die during the storm. We have been working on his house since winter and it is almost ready for him to move into. He has been a joy to work with as he would sit in his wheelchair and hold sheetrock while it was being installed. He loves the Lord and rejoices in His goodness.
2. Another elderly couple who just moved back into their house which had been flooded. We started working on their house at the beginning of the year. When we started working there we noticed paw prints from their dogs on the ceiling of their living room. During the storm, as the water rose in their house the dogs swam around until they could climb up on a tall piece of furniture and then they tried to get to higher ground through the ceiling.
3. An elderly widow, who is legally blind, needed a new roof. Someone told her they had put a new roof on, and later she discovered that they had put on tar paper with no shingles. We completed the job for her. She always has a word of praise about God.
